Review: Ten Year Dance by Ara Grigorian

Earlier this year I read a marvelous romance called Game of Love. The book introduced two fascinating people and a romance who overcame seemingly impossible odds to come to their happily-ever-after. Ara Grigorian delivers a powerful story, so when I heard he’d written another romance I jumped at the chance to read and review it.
I was not disappointed. Once again, we’re invited into the lives of two strong, intelligent, and multi-faceted people. The kind you watch in awe and wish you could emulate. Sophie is an attorney, sharp and driven. She’s also athletic, and soundly out-plays her best friend Pete. She’s endured a disastrous marriage and has finally made the decision to file for divorce. Pete is a successful architect. He loves his large, boisterous Greek family, but has given up on finding true love for himself.
Ten Year Dance takes you through Sophie and Pete’s lives from the time they meet in junior high, through the turbulent high school years, and culminating with their ten-year class reunion. Both of them have come to a point where they need to make important decisions about their professional lives. But before they can do that, they need to learn more about themselves and each other.

The quality that sets a book apart is its ability to make the reader care about its characters. While reading this book there were times I wanted to hug both Sophie and Pete, and other times when I wanted to smack them silly for being so blind and foolish. I’m certain you’ll be caught up in their story, too.

Read more about the story below!

Best friends since sixth grade. A ten-year high school reunion. A truth they’ve danced around for a decade.

Unlucky-in-love Sophie Perez knows her divorce won’t be easy—but she doesn’t expect it to be dangerous. So when things get ugly, she agrees to move in with Pete Nicos, her commitment-phobic best friend since childhood. Pete has always been there for Sophie, just like she’s been there for him. At first, taking her in seems like the best option, but soon her tantalizing proximity blurs the lines of friendship. With their high school reunion on the horizon will they find closure, forgiveness, and new beginnings?

Ten Year Dance is a contemporary love story, rich with engaging and relatable characters trying to find themselves and each other. Ara Grigorian’s latest will stay with you long after you turn the final page.

About the Author:

Armenian by heritage, born in Iran, lived in Barcelona, and escaped New York until he found his home in Los Angeles, Ara’s first eleven years were both busy and confusing. The fruit salad of languages would slow down his genetically encoded need to tell stories. Until then, an alter ego would be required…   He received an engineering degree from California State University Northridge and earned his MBA from the University of Southern California. Today, he is a technology executive in the entertainment industry. True to the Hollywood life, Ara wrote for a children’s television pilot that could have made him rich (but didn’t) and nearly sold a video game to a major publisher (who closed shop days later).   But something was amiss until his wife read him the riot act. “Will you stop talking about wanting to be a writer and just do it?” So with her support (and mandate), and their two boys serving as his muse, he wrote stories.   Fascinated by the human species, Ara writes about choices, relationships, and second chances. Always a sucker for a hopeful ending, he writes contemporary romance stories. He is an alumnus of both the Santa Barbara Writers Conference and Southern California Writers’ Conference (where he also serves as a workshop leader). Ara is an active member of the Romance Writers of America and its Los Angeles chapter.   Ara is represented by Stacey Donaghy.

I asked Pamela a few questions about her new edition of the Inheritance.
Original Cover

PK: Why did you feel you needed to revise The Inheritance?

PT: The original novel was published in 2007 under the White Rose imprint of The Wild Rose Press. When White Rose became a publishing company on its own and then an imprint of Pelican Book Group, the book was part of the transitions. I was talking with PBG’s Sr. Editor about another project and she told me she’d thought about editing it and re-publishing under PBG. I loved the idea and quickly signed a new contract.

PK: Any problems?

PT: We had a few minor tweaks to work out. I write inspirational “with an edge” and some of the edits didn’t feel like this was my book at all. But as I was working with one of the most generous and understanding editors I’ve ever dealt with, she allowed a lot of the scenes she originally wanted to cut, to remain.

PK: What kinds of changes were made?

PT: Most of the changes were minor updates to bring the story more into the new millennium and of course a great new cover. Here’s an example:

Original Version:

“What’s this?” Rebecca asked, removing the sheets of paper off the passenger seat so she could sit in it.
“I jumped on the Internet and printed us up a map. Look it even has written directions,” Ray answered.
Rebecca giggled. “Jumped on the Internet and printed up a map? You sound like a fifteen-year-old with a new toy instead of a grown man that’s well educated.”
Ray chuckled. “Let me see if I can rephrase that then. I utilized my PC, accessed the Internet and printed out directions and a map. Better?”

New Release:

“What’s this?” Ray asked when Rebecca handed him some papers before climbing into the front seat of his SUV.
“I went online and printed out a map and directions for our trip.”
He chuckled. “That’s what the GPS on my phone is for.”
She flushed. “Oh, I didn’t think of that. Besides, wouldn’t this be much easier than trying to read directions on your phone?”
“Probably so, but its voice activated, too.”
She shook her head, laughed. “Men and their toys.”
“Hey, women use technology.”
“Not me. I’d rather have written directions.”
